The agreement between you and us.
By installing or using Sophist (the "app"), you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
Sophist provides a curated library of classical Greek texts, vocabulary tools, exercises, and an AI tutor ("Sophist"). The library texts are in the public domain. The app, server, design, and tooling are © Daniel Zautner, 2026.
Reading the library, saving vocabulary, reviewing, and quizzing are free and require no subscription.
The Sophist AI tutor is free up to 15 messages per day. Subscriptions remove that limit:
All subscription billing is handled by Apple. Pricing is shown in the app and may vary by region. Auto-renewing subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel any subscription via Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions on your iOS device.
Subscriptions are also subject to a hard daily ceiling of 500 messages to prevent abuse. This ceiling is not normally reachable in good-faith use.
You may instead supply your own OpenRouter API key in Settings. In this mode the app calls OpenRouter directly; you are responsible for any usage charges your key incurs. We do not see your key (it is stored only in your device's Keychain) and we do not see your messages.
All in-app purchases — including subscriptions — are processed by Apple. Refund requests must be made to Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. We do not have access to your payment method and cannot directly issue refunds. If you believe you have been wrongly charged, please email hello@sophistapp.com and we will assist where we can.
You agree to use Sophist for personal, non-commercial study. You agree not to:
We may suspend or terminate access for a device that violates these terms.
The Sophist tutor is powered by a large language model. It can be wrong, especially on disputed scholarly matters, rare textual variants, or extreme corner cases of grammar. Do not cite Sophist as an authority in academic work without verifying against a primary source. We provide it as a teaching aid, not a peer-reviewed reference.
Sophist is provided "as is." We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that the AI's responses will be accurate. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all implied warranties.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim related to the app is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages.
If we materially change these terms, we will post the revised version here and update the "Last updated" date. Continued use of the app after a change constitutes acceptance.
These terms are governed by the laws of Finland. Disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Helsinki.
